Mature-age art that takes you back and forth in time: As Time Goes By. Portraits. By Barbara Davatz #photography #longterm

A lot of times people, especially artists, set out on their little projects without really knowing where they’re headed. And sometimes, the beauty of their work is only recognisable after a long time has gone by. Such is the case with Barbara Davatz’s portraits of 12 couples, taken over a period of 32 years, from 1982 to 2014: „As Time Goes By“.

Granted, the idea is not especially unique or original. It’s been done before and it will continue to be done. But still, I find it truly fascinating regardless. I could look at these pictures for hours and imagine these peoples‘ lives, their happy moments, their rows, their break-ups and friendships. It’s like reading a book instead of watching a film, your imagination can run free and it does. I love it. In a world that is full of words like bingewatching and hashtags, it’s a really nice, down-to-earth, refreshingly traditional way of storytelling.

If I was so inclined I’d get my camera and start a project of my own… Alas, I will probably pack up in a minute, shut down my computer and leave the office to go home and have dinner with my family. I guess, better even than photos and stories is the real thing, the happysadexhaustingsleepdeprivedeuphoricannoyedbusyquarrelinglaughingdancingbabycryingcuddling reality of everyday life.

Indeed.
